    A wonderful little guidebook of Kalamazoo's buildings. Information from this book proved helpful with the East Michigan Ave. section and many of the historic homes. Well illustrated.

  • History of Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Everts & Abbott, Philadelphia, 1880.
    Reprinted in 1976 by Unigraphic Inc. Evansville Indiana. A wonderful source for information on important people and buildings in 1880.

  • The Kalamazoo Gazette.
    For the purposes of this site articles from 1912 to present were used. Recent material that has been particularly useful are the weekly 'Looking Back' sections which feature historic photos and some information about them. A collection of such clippings going back to the early 1980's was utilized.

  • The Kalamazoo Public Library
    Has many of the books on this list in its collection. Also has a collection of City Directories, and newspapers on microfilm. Just a small sampling of what it has to offer.

    Put out by the Kalamazoo Gazette, this book contains 128 pages of great historic photographs.

    A great source for information on Kalamazoo's varied industries, the buildings, and those who built them. Lots of rare photographs.

  • Mayer, Elizabeth. Yes, There were Germans in Kalamazoo. The Kalamazoo County Historical Society, Kalamazoo, 1979.
    Very fascinating look at Kalamazoo's German heritage. Tons of information on the building's of East Michigan Ave., the men, and companies behind them.


  • Polk's Kalamazoo City Directory. R.L. Polk & Co., Detroit, 1939.
    Priceless source of information. Includes listing of every address, who/what occupied it, and what the occupation was. A 1939 copy in my collection was used heavily though copies for other years have also been studied.

  • Rowe, Ford. Kalamazoo: The Debt-Free City. 1939.
    Interesting period piece that has plenty of historical information on Kalamazoo up to 1939. Lots of pictures.


  • Schmitt, Peter. Kalamazoo: Nineteenth-Century Homes in a Midwestern Village. Kalamazoo Historical Commission, Kalamazoo, 1976.
    Most of the information regarding the historic homes and the people who built them came from this book. Very informative and well illustrated with photographs by Balthazar Korab.

  • Sharpsteen, Harold. The Life of John Henry Burke. Ihling Bros. Everard Co., Kalamazoo, 1948.
    The life story one of Kalamazoo's great citizens. Burke was a Realtor who organized the Arcade Company. For the purposes of this site this book was invaluable as a reference for much detail on the old and new Burdick Hotels.

  • Thompson, Mark. Frontier Pilgrims: A Sesquicentennial History of the First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo. Ihling Bros. Everard Co., Kalamazoo, 1986.
    Just what it says. A detailed history of the First Baptist Church with some nice illustrations.


  • The Western Michigan Archives and Regional History Collections.
    Like the Library, a great location to find materials. They have books, photos, newspaper clippings, etc... A must visit.
