The
eight story Kalamazoo National Bank Building
is recognized as the city's first skyscraper. When it opened
in 1907 the primary tenant was the Kalamazoo National Bank.
Its upper floors housed a variety of small businesses.
The
Kalamazoo National Bank Building would eventually be overshadowed
by the 10 story Hanselman Building across the street. The Kalamazoo
National Bank moved out in 1929. Thereafter the building has
been called the Kalamazoo Building. In the 1960's the classical
exterior was altered with the removal of the cornice followed
by alterations to the facades. It is currently occupied by Keystone
Bank.
