This
splendid 15 story Art Deco office tower was built in 1929 by
the Chicago architects Weary & Alford. Weary & Alford
had also designed the First National Bank and would design Kalamazoo's
new City Hall. The building was commissioned for the Bank of
Kalamazoo. However, this institution was ruined by the Great
Depression so the American National Bank
would occupy the building.
Today
the building is occupied by Old Kent. However, the beauty of
its original design is still intact. The limestone exterior
is noted for its detailed carvings and metal work.
