New York born attorney Josiah Hawes built this large home in 1855 shortly after arriving in Kalamazoo.

Hawes sold the home to Clark Potter, a well-to-do 'gentleman farmer' in 1870. Shortly thereafter Potter updated the house with Italianate features. The result of these renovations still speak to this electic structure's history.
