The
massive power station of the abandoned Bryant
Paper Mill stands in lonely decay. At the turn of the
century the scene was much different. Kalamazoo was 'The Paper
City' with several mills operated in and around the city. The
Bryant Paper Mill was one of the first, and largest.
The
mill started in 1895 when paper manufacturers Frank Milham,
Noah Bryant, and John King came to Kalamazoo. The plant was
designed by local civil engineer Dan J. Albertson and built
by Rickman & Atkins. It was ready for operation in 1896.
The massive complex later became the Allied Paper Company and
Portage Paper Company. It closed in the late 1990's.
