Shortly
after the mall reopening began one of the last two remaining
large department stores, Jacobson's,
closed its doors. It was fitting. Jacobson's was built in 1959
just as the Kalamazoo Mall was finished.
Replacing the old
Central Fire Station, Jacobson's was remodeled and expanded
in 1974. Closed in 1997 the empty store was soon converted to
the Epic Center, a building housing
various art related businesses and restaurants.
